Buying a Home in Olds, Alberta: A Buyer's Guide
Olds is the largest town in Mountain View County, about an hour north of Calgary just off Highway 2. It has the services of a bigger centre — schools, a hospital, shopping and Olds College — with a small-town pace and quick access to farmland and acreages in every direction.
Who buys in Olds?
Families looking for more house for their money than in Calgary or Airdrie, people working in agriculture or at the college, retirees, and buyers who want an acreage within an easy drive of town services.
What to know before you buy
- Town or country? Decide early whether you want a home in town or an acreage nearby. Acreages bring wells, septic and longer drives, so the checklist is different.
- Rental demand near the college. Homes close to Olds College can attract student renters, which is good for investors and worth knowing if you want a quiet street.
- Commute. If you work in Calgary, drive the route at rush hour before you commit.
- Inspections. Older homes in established parts of town may have original plumbing, wiring or windows. A home inspection is worth every dollar.
